Starship Captains need Virtual Assistance

Star Trek featured imageDo you dream of having more time to spend ‘on’ your business rather than ‘in’ it? But does the reality of delegating make you break out in a cold sweat? If so, this blog post might strike a chord with you.

Star Trek and Business Parallels

To illustrate my point, I’ll use Star Trek as an example. If you’re not a Trekkie fan, bear with me. I want to take you back to the episode where the Enterprise is taken over by Tribbles, causing so much work for Captain Kirk and the crew, who should have been busy exploring the galaxy. Imagine quickly multiplying furry creatures that look cute but take over ship systems, fill the halls and which make Kirk’s day significantly less productive. Tripping over and dealing with Tribbles constantly makes the efficient running of the Enterprise impossible.

Now switch out Tribbles for admin tasks – diary management, website updates, replying to enquiries, preparing reports, the demands of social media and the 101 other business tasks you face in a working week. That’s a lot of not-so cute work to navigate and get through before you get close to the core tasks associated with running and growing your business. You can’t do it alone.

Running your Starship effectively

Consider how any starship or organisation works. You tend to have a captain, then a commander or second in command, then a number of high level, highly skilled bridge staff who work on different parts of maintaining the ship’s course and functions in order to meet mission goals. The work is split up, allowing the captain to concentrate on bravely forging forward into the unknown. This organisational model is easily replicated in any company that has staff.

Sole traders and small business owners, however, seem to think that there is no option but to be captain, first officer, communications officer Captain Kirkand to hold every other post at the same time. Not only is this a lot of responsibility and a lot of work, but it also means that you are not prioritising time to be the captain – the lead role – and to push the mission forward. You can’t run your starship or your business effectively without delegating.

Whether you are running a business without employees or have staff but could use an extra pair of hands without adding to long-term staffing costs, using a qualified Virtual Assistant could be advantageous.

Galaxy-Wide Virtual Assistant Support

One of the most effective ways to lighten the load, as the captain, is to work with a Virtual Assistant. You can read more about the services I offer to businesses, sole traders and starship captains here. I lift the weight off your shoulders. I save you time and streamline your systems. Working flexibly to the needs of the company/battlecruiser means that my services work out to be more cost-effective than those of an employee and I enable you to better deploy your resources elsewhere. As I’m self-employed you don’t have to offer employee benefits.

Don’t wait until your ship is overrun with Tribbles or your business and your time are bogged down with work that could be easily handed over to someone else. Be proactive and get in touch to see how I can help you run a more streamlined Enterprise, which will enable you to concentrate on profits, expansion and a better work-life balance.
